The Burnt Face Album - Atlanta
Along with musician The Profit and songstress/emcee
Walta, Surafel (emcee) recorded one of the first
hip-hop albums that incorporated Amharic lyrics.
In an interview describing their music Surafel
notes: "We are one of the few Ethiopians
who are trying to make it in hip-hop, so we are
always conscious of the things we say in our lyrics
because we don’t want the good image of
Ethiopian music to be tarnished with some negative
vibe. That means no cursing in our songs or talking
about things that are unrighteous. We try to put
an Ethiopian flavor in the beats we make and lyrics
we write. Even though most of our songs are strictly
hip-hop, we inject either a little Amharic or
just sample an Ethiopian beat."
Surafel's Album in the Making..
A few days prior to his death, Surafel had submitted
a cover design of his new album project to the
Arts & Entertainment division of Tadias Magazine.
He wanted to have it advertised in the October
2003 issue along with a brief write-up on his
new songs. The Album was entitled "Surafel".
The cover reads: "Exodus Records Presents
Surafel -- Coming Soon to a Planet Near You".
The album cover is shown below:
